About this book
Leaves from the woods beside the Ettrick become tokens of old friendships in John D. Cossar's opening poem. Published in 1870, this collection moves between remembered landscapes, personal feeling and moral reflection. Its prelude addresses critics, seers, sages and the public, giving the poet room to ask for a fair hearing while challenging vanity, greed and wasted lives.
The contents bring longer narrative poems together with pieces on schoolmates, music, friendship, spring flowers and bereavement. In the middle passage, a grieving husband wanders into moonlit woods, where the surrounding trees, stream and stars seem to answer his sorrow. Nature serves both as a store of memories and as a language for difficult feelings. Readers interested in nineteenth-century verse can follow the shifts between public admonition and intimate scenes of loss, affection and hope.
