About this book

The introduction to Alice Turner Curtis's book sets it in 1778. Ruth Pennell and Winifred Merrill live in Philadelphia, which has been for some time in the hands of General Howe and the British army. Ruth's father is with Washington at Valley Forge, and the two girls are ardent supporters of the American cause and admirers of the Marquis de Lafayette.

In one scene the girls play with dolls named Josephine and Cecilia and pick scraps from a bag for a sash and a bonnet, until a clock strikes twelve and Ruth hurries home, wondering what Aunt Deborah will say. In another, they are out with a pony called Fluff to gather wild honeysuckle and find that twilight has come and they are miles from home on a narrow, unknown road. A further scene has Aunt Deborah present Ruth to Lafayette, who wears the uniform of an American officer while two soldiers stand guard at the open door.
