About this book
Thirteen-year-old Dick Stevens tries to keep his family hopeful as they return across Nevada after a failed search for a new home. Their wagon is battered, their horses are weak, and their food has run out. At a pool near the desert, Dick's father leaves camp to hunt. When darkness falls without his return, the boy must steady his worried mother while facing his own fears.
James Otis makes family responsibility the driving force of this children's adventure. Dick's care for his mother and little sister gives the opening its warmth, while his struggle through a blinding sandstorm brings immediate physical danger. With his father's life depending on help, even shelter behind a mound of sand becomes a difficult choice. Readers will find a short frontier story about endurance, practical courage, and a child taking on urgent adult responsibilities.
