About this book

Gunfire reaches Bryant Cavendish's cattle ranch through a twisting canyon in western Texas. The old ranch owner suspects trouble beyond his sheltered basin, while nearby a wounded Texas Ranger struggles to recover after an ambush. Fran Striker's 1941 novel sets its opening action among steep rock walls, isolated grazing land and a family accustomed to Bryant's domineering temper. His niece Penelope brings a livelier presence to a household shaped by his grudges and distrust.

The story follows frontier danger into a mystery of movements and motives. In a later scene, the masked Lone Ranger approaches the ranch quietly, watches a horseman ride toward Thunder Mountain and investigates a bunkhouse where a poker game appears to have ended abruptly. Precise descriptions of sound, darkness and cautious movement give the action its suspense. Readers interested in Western fiction for younger audiences will find ranch life, gunplay and an investigator testing what he sees before deciding his next move.
