About this book
The preface presents the book as a response to the need for a general shoemaking textbook for industrial, trade and commercial schools and new entrants to the rubber, shoe and leather trades. The treatment of hides explains that thick hides intended for upper leather are cut into sides before tanning is complete. The cutting process passes the hide between rollers and against a sharp knife edge that splits the material into two or more sheets.
The account of treeing describes liquid preparations, often called composition, being worked into the upper and filling it to some extent. The explanation of shoe dressing defines the operation as applying a liquid dressing, with one or two coats used in different cases.
