About this book
Textiles, for Commercial, Industrial, and Domestic Arts Schools, by William H. Dooley, has a preface saying the author has failed to find a book explaining the manufacture and testing of textiles for commercial, industrial, domestic arts, and continuation schools. The preface says the author established the first industrial school for boys and girls in Massachusetts and has been in charge of it since its inception.
The text says Adelaide wool has a reputation for sound Merinos, with fiber moderately fine but not of uniform length, and that Van wool from Tasmania is useful for mixing with other good wools. The text says gingham is a single cloth composed entirely of cotton, always woven with a plain weave, yarn-dyed in stripes or checks and originally of Indian make. A list of entries includes Cotton, carding, combing, drawing and finishing.
