About this book

An aspiring novelist named Ralph imagines a future in which visitors preserve the house where he wrote his famous book. Thomas Bailey Aldrich sets this grand ambition beside the blunt responses of Mrs. Muggins and the literary opinions of Ralph's friend Barescythe, a newspaper critic. The result is a comic frame for a novel presented chapter by chapter, with the critic's running remarks exposing the young writer's vanity and uncertain talent.

Inside that frame, the story moves from a house by the sea to offices, publishers and a prison. Daisy Snarle and a necklace figure in its sentimental drama, while the middle excerpt follows Mortimer Walters as he breaks with his domineering employer, Mr. Flint.
