About this book
A Minstrel in France is by Harry Lauder. The book is dedicated to the memory of a beloved son, Captain John Lauder, First 8th, Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders, killed in France, December 28, 1916. The text says Britain declared war upon Germany on a day when the writer and others sat at lunch in a hotel at Melbourne and the newsboys began to cry the extras.
Someone calls Leftenant Lauder over and over, and John is handed a cablegram of just two words, Mobilize. Return. The writer says there was no doubt about being under fire, with a droning like the noise bees make, which was the drone of the German shells. The text says that after John was killed his brother officers sent all his personal belongings.
