About this book
A Natural History for Young People, subtitled Our Animal Friends in Their Native Homes, is by Phebe Westcott Humphreys. The preface says this little Volume of Natural History has been prepared to fill a long-felt want. The front matter says the book includes mammals, birds and fishes.
The text says the Polar Bear is hunted by the Esquimau chiefly by means of Dogs. A section headed The Labiated, or Sloth Bear says this bear is a native of India and feeds mainly on vegetables. The text says that the Bloodheads, which may be termed small in relation to the enormous Whale, wage war in groups of five or ten.
