About this book
An offer of a baronetcy turns public principle into a family argument in Arnold Bennett's three-act comedy. The action stays in the Culvers' well-furnished West End sitting-room over three days around the end of the year. Mr. Culver intends to refuse the honour, while his wife wants him to accept it. Their dispute gives newspaper owner Tranto an opportunity to offer advice on the uncomfortable relationship between conviction and married life.
The opening introduces Hildegarde, who writes household food-economy articles, and her schoolboy brother John, whose interest in politics leads him to question the trade in honours and the workings of the London press. Wartime ministries, newspaper influence and hereditary status enter the conversation through jokes and pointed exchanges.
