About this book
Robert Grant's A Romantic Young Lady is told in the first person by Virginia. In one conversation an older woman tells her she is very simple if she thinks dancing the German at parties will teach her about life, and warns that a young dandy may come after her fortune. Virginia answers that her father has told her to be on guard against insincere people, and the woman, remarking that Virginia is a Harlan, gives her a bit of old lace with a locket inside that she wore when Virginia's father was married.
Another passage describes a man who has taken a vow of approximate poverty and holds that property beyond what common needs and comforts require is an obstacle to a well-ordered life. In a scene in a lawyer's office, the lawyer, angry, calls a young man a fool and says the young lady is the superior of any man he knows. The young man answers that he has said he is a gentleman and values that reputation above anything.
