About this book

E. M. Forster set this bright social comedy against the sunlight of Florence and the tidy hedgerows of Edwardian Surrey. Lucy Honeychurch, chaperoned by a fussy older cousin, meets the frank and unconventional George Emerson at an Italian pension, and a kiss among the violets unsettles everything she thought she wanted. Back home she accepts the polished but condescending Cecil Vyse, then spends the rest of the book learning to tell the difference between what her class expects and what her heart actually feels. Forster writes lightly but with real bite about snobbery, muddle, and the courage it takes to be honest. A warm, funny, quietly radical novel.
