About this book
The preface sets out to sketch the history of the monastic institution from its origin to its overthrow in the Reformation period. The preface acknowledges that consulting original sources was impracticable in most instances, while intermediate authorities were studied as widely as possible. The account describes the Essenes as a sect outside the Jewish ecclesiastical body, bound by strict vows and professing extraordinary purity.
The discussion of the Mendicant friars connects their appearance with conditions demanding a change to the monastic principle of retirement. The account says that seclusion in the cloister was no longer possible in view of changes in religious thought and practice.
