About this book
United States Steel is subtitled A Corporation With a Soul and is by Arundel Cotter. A prefatory note says the book is planned as an open and aboveboard presentation of the development of a great business. The note also says the story of the steel industry is the story of the United States Steel Corporation, and that one cannot be told without the other.
The text describes Morgan as appearing, to those who knew him by sight only, a solitary, stern figure, perhaps a little too much inclined toward impressing his own will on others. A financial writer assigned to get Morgan to talk by hook or by crook invaded his private yacht and was only saved from being ejected by the banker himself, who invited his visitor to the saloon and treated him like an honored guest. The text calls the most notable event of 1906 the negotiation of a lease by the Corporation on the ore properties owned by the Great Northern and Northern Pacific Railway companies, commonly known as the Hill Lease.
