About this book
Adelina Fiske finds affection and an unexplained restriction in the home of Harold and Mary Tracy. The brother and sister have welcomed her into their quiet life at Deanmouth, but certain visits to the western wing are discouraged, and each summer they urge her to spend time away. Their kindness makes these arrangements harder to question, while Mary's unusual agitation gives Adelina fresh reason to wonder what the household conceals.
May Evelyn Skiles builds this short novel around domestic secrecy, romantic uncertainty and the difficulty of interpreting another person's feelings. A later dispute with Ralph turns on a loose page from Adelina's journal: each reads its meaning differently, and wounded pride delays an explanation. Conversations, teasing exchanges and inward reflections carry the tension, offering readers a story in which trust is tested through small observations and mistaken assumptions.
