About this book

The Light of the Star is a novel by Hamlin Garland. Young Douglass grows feverishly impatient of the long days that lie between him and his appointment with Miss Merival, which reached him through the hand of her manager. Mr. Douglass is described as the author of The Modern Stage, the little book of essays we liked so well.

The Helen Merival before him was as simple, candid, and cordial as his own sister, and her face seemed plain at first. As a new drama is outlined, the mind of the actress takes hold of Enid's character, so opposite in energy to Lillian, and she says, “I see I shall never want for parts while you are my playwright.” Two characters take lunch together, seated at the same table in the same way, and yet not in the same spirit.

Hamlin Garland

A boyhood on farms in Wisconsin, Iowa and Dakota Territory gave Hamlin Garland the material he worked for fifty years. Born in 1860 near West Salem, Wisconsin, he left for Boston in 1884, read Henry George in the public library, and turned single-tax anger into fiction that refused to make prairie farming look picturesque.
