About this book

A Street of Paris and Its Inhabitant is by Honoré de Balzac, translated by Henri Pene du Bois. The contents list gives Physiognomy of the Street, Silhouette of the Inhabitant, Madame Adolphe, and one headed This Shows That the Wife of a Man of Science Is Very Unhappy. The preface says that this little Parisian silhouette in prose was written by Balzac to be the first chapter of a new series of the Comedie Humaine that he was preparing while the first was finishing.

The text says that Paris has curved streets, streets that are serpentine, and counts, perhaps, only the Rue Boudreau in the Chaussee d'Antin and the Rue Duguay-Trouin near the Luxembourg as streets shaped exactly like a T-square. A professor says to himself that Malus was a genius arrested in his course when he had almost captured the empire of light, and that we have had Fresnel.
