About this book

Adieu is by Honoré de Balzac. The text is translated by Katharine Prescott Wormeley, and its chapters include An Old Monastery and The Passage of the Beresina. A huntsman peacefully seated at the edge of the forest of Ile-Adam calls out Come, deputy of the Centre, forward! Quick step! march! if we want to be in time to dine with the others.

Colonel de Sucy exclaims France! such are thy deputies! and speaks of six years in the wilds of Siberia. The text describes a sea of fire lying before them in the darkness of the night, licking up the cabins and the bivouacs, and a column of soldiers forcing its way to the bridge, between two hedges of dead bodies. Monsieur Fanjat, affected by the incident, is said to have met with many examples of the prophetic faculty and the gift of second sight since he made a close study of insanity.
