About this book

The Flying Doctor, also titled Le Médecin Volant, is by Molière, translated into English prose with short introductions and explanatory notes by Charles Heron Wall. The persons represented include Gorgibus, father to Lucile, Valère, in love with Lucile, and Sganarelle, servant to Valère. Sabine says her uncle is bent upon marrying her cousin to Villebrequin.

Sabine suggests that a servant be dressed up as a doctor, since there is no one more easy to dupe than the old fellow. Sganarelle tells Gorgibus that he is the brother of a man who has just left the house, that they are twins who resemble each other like two peas, and that his name is Narcissus.

Molière

Molière, born Jean-Baptiste Poquelin (1622-1673), was the leading comic playwright and actor of the age of Louis XIV. His satires of hypocrisy, pretension, and folly, among them Tartuffe, The Misanthrope, and The Miser, remain cornerstones of the French theatrical tradition.
