About this book
A Second Home is a work by Honoré de Balzac, translated by Clara Bell. The dedication is to Madame la Comtesse Louise de Turheim as a token of remembrance and affectionate respect. The text describes the Rue du Tourniquet-Saint-Jean, formerly one of the darkest and most tortuous of the streets about the Hotel de Ville, which zigzagged round the little gardens of the Paris Prefecture.
The text says the most selfish soul who chanced to see this domestic scene would carry away with him a perfect image of the life led in Paris by the working class of women. The text says young Granville saw an enormous crucifix of ebony and ivory surrounded by a wreath of box that had been blessed. The Count replies that he pays for a sensation, as he would to-morrow pay a pile of gold to recover the most childish illusion that would but make his heart glow.
