About this book
The history describes charity schools as a partial remedy for a situation in which opportunities for elementary education were rare and surviving schools had suffered from several disadvantages. The charity schools taught and boarded poor children, sometimes provided clothes, and prepared boys for apprenticeship and girls for domestic service.
The account estimates that probably about one thousand schools on this general philanthropic basis had been established in England and Wales by the middle of the eighteenth century. The discussion of England distinguishes nonsectarian religious instruction in board schools from voluntary schools’ more time-consuming religious training, which stressed the creed and denominational teaching of some church.
