About this book
The Teaching of History is by Ernest C. Hartwell, M.A., Superintendent of Schools, Petoskey, Mich. The editor's introduction says the volume is offered as a guide to history teachers of the high school and the upper grammar grades. The introduction says the volume is directly concerned with the teaching methods to be employed in the history period.
The contents list gives, among others, how to begin the course, the assignment of the lesson and the method of the recitation. The text says it is too much to expect high school pupils to solve historical problems extemporaneously. The text says that, if statements are to be defended or opposed, the high school student should be given time to prepare his answer. The text says the ambition of the good instructor is to give an examination which shall at once be thorough, reasonable, and intelligently directed toward finding what the student has really learned.
