About this book
Christian Schools and Scholars, by Augusta Theodosia Drane, presents a general and connected sketch of Christian education down to the Council of Trent, drawing on the lives of people engaged in that work. The preface acknowledges that a subject covering such a wide field could necessarily receive only partial treatment and explains the need to account for omissions.
A chapter headed The Iron Age introduces Baronius's description of the tenth century as a period deficient in excellence and writers but abundant in vice. The account of teaching in an abbey lists versification, poetry, rhetoric, geometry, astronomy and theology among the subjects taught to sons of the nobility. The discussion also suggests that verses preserved by Martene, professing to come from an Irish exile, may be attributable to one of the Irish professors.
