About this book
A Student's History of England, v. 1, B.C. 55-A.D. 1509, is by Samuel Rawson Gardiner, and the title page names the whole work as running from the earliest times to the death of King Edward VII. A list of pictures includes the Hall of Oakham castle, Rutland, built about 1185, and a Norman house at Lincoln, called the Jews' House.
The text says that Innocent had reached his aim as far as John was concerned, and that in his eyes the Papacy was not merely the guide of the Church, it was an institution for controlling kings and forcing them to act in accordance with the orders of the Popes. A section headed The Resistance of the Barons and Clergy, 1213, says that John's fleet fell upon the French fleet off the coast of Flanders and destroyed it. One entry for Edward V. says that he succeeds to the throne, is lodged in the Tower and is deposed, and the entry for Edward, Prince of Wales, son of Henry VI., lists his birth and his being slain at Tewkesbury.
