About this book
The Leading Facts of English History is credited to D. H. Montgomery and belongs to The Leading Facts of History Series. The preface says most of the materials for this book were gathered by the writer during several years' residence in England, and that the attempt is made to illustrate the law of national growth. A numbered section headed "The Mass of the Native Population Slaves; Roman Villas" says that the chief cities of Britain were exempt from oppression, while outside these cities the great mass of the native Britons were bound to the soil and could not leave it.
A section dated 1649 tells of a high court of justice constituted to try the King on a charge of treason against the nation, with John Bradshaw as the chief judge or presiding officer. The history says that the Cabinet, under the lead of Sir Robert Walpole, the first Prime Minister, in 1721 became responsible for the policy of the sovereign.
