About this book
A Synopsis of the Birds of North America describes the adult male Common Osprey with a bluish-black bill, a light blue cere and pale greyish-blue feet tinged anteriorly with yellow. The osprey description distinguishes young birds by the broad brownish-white tips on the feathers of their upper parts and their pure white lower parts. The osprey entry gives a range northward from Texas, throughout the interior and along the north-west coast, with residence in the south.
The Yellow-bellied Woodpecker description gives the male a bright carmine crown and throat, with black patches and bands among the markings. The woodpecker entry describes the female as similar, but with a white throat and less pure yellow on the lower parts.
