About this book

The Bird Book is a reference illustrating in natural colors more than seven hundred North American birds, with several hundred photographs of their nests and eggs, by Chester A. Reed, B. S. The title page gives Garden City, New York, 1915. The front pages include a page headed Barn Owl and one headed Topography of a Bird. The contents arrange the birds by order and family, starting with Diving Birds and the grebes, loons, auks, murres and puffins.

Entries give a bird's range, notes on its habits and nest, the color and size of its eggs, and in places a data line naming the place, date and collector of a set. One entry says the California Murre breeds from the Farallones north to Alaska and lays a single egg on a bare ledge. The Flycatchers entry describes insect-eating birds that sit on a dead twig and watch for passing insects. The volume also has an index of English and Latin names with page numbers.
