About this book
A Taxonomic Study of the Middle American Snake, Pituophis deppei is a book by William Edward Duellman. The text says that field work in Michoacán revealed that two supposed subspecies of Pituophis deppei were sympatric, and that this discovery led to the examination of all available 124 museum specimens of these snakes. The writer thanks the persons who permitted the examination of specimens in their care, including Charles M. Bogert, American Museum of Natural History (AMNH).
The historical review says Duméril, in 1853, described Elaphis deppei from a specimen in the Leiden Museum from Mexico. One entry for Pituophis deppei jani gives the type as United States National Museum, No. 1522, from Buena Vista, Coahuila, obtained by Lieutenant Darius N. Couch.
