About this book
A Theory of Pure Design sets out a purpose of elucidating, so far as possible, the principles underlying the practice of drawing and painting as a Fine Art. The discussion of tone balance allows very different tones and tone contrasts to oppose one another on the two sides of a center or axis. The proposed search for a balance center cannot very well be done by reasoning and must instead be done by visual feeling.
The account of rhythm says that substituting lines which themselves induce movement may increase the feeling of rhythm, provided the directions of movement are consistent. The definition of tone harmony requires tones to have at least something in common, either value or color, and separates value harmony, color harmony, and harmony of intensities.
