About this book
Design and Tradition presents an account of principles and historical development in architecture and the applied arts. The discussion of columns gives different spacings for the Corinthian order, including arrangements with coupled columns measured from centre to centre. The text recommends vertical alignment of principal features, with dentils, modillions and other strongly marked features centred on columns and equally spaced between them.
The practical instructions describe sketching designs in charcoal, drawing the desired lines in ink and, when dry, rubbing the charcoal with leather or soft cloth. The instructions explain that relief effects can be obtained by taking out lights and strengthening shadows, while sections through the detail usually indicate the relief to avoid misunderstanding.
