About this book
Rambles on the Riviera says that more has been said and written of Provence that is of interest than of any other land, from the days of Petrarch to those of Mistral. Thiers was definite when he said, At Valence the south commences, the text says. The mistral is the name given to that dread north wind of the Rhône valley, one of the three plagues of Provence.
Toulon was founded by the Phœnicians, it is supposed sometime before the tenth century. A remark on language says the hybrid speech heard on street corners is not Provençal but Franco-Italian. A frontier station by road is described, where one leaves gendarmes behind and has his first encounter with the carabiniers of Italy.
