About this book
The Motor Routes of France describes ancient streets and a church tower with delicate carved stone, abundant ornament, and a crocketed and coroneted spire. The church's western entrance is often open, allowing a passer-by to see an ornamented doorway against a dark interior relieved by fifteenth and sixteenth century stained glass. Henri IV., during a stay at Caudebec, is reported to have praised the chapel while adding that the jewel was badly set.
The history of Caudebec says the place began as a fishing village under the control of the Abbey of St. Wandrille and soon grew prosperous with its convenient quay. The river description gives the height of a rushing wall of water as 6 to 12 feet, with enough force to dislodge and carry away great stones.
