About this book
Applied Physiology, Including the Effects of Alcohol and Narcotics, is a book by Frank Overton. The preface calls it a primary text-book of applied physiology that follows a natural order of treatment. The preface says that in each subject elementary anatomical facts are presented in a manner which impresses function rather than form, and that the facts and principles are then applied to everyday life.
A lesson on the body says that water is everywhere in the body, that even the teeth have water, and that most of our flesh is water. The book explains that the white of an egg is albumin, and that lean meat and cheese are nearly all albumin. The text on nails says that biting the nails leaves their ends rough, and that clean nails are one mark of a careful boy or girl. On breathing, the text says that if a child has adenoids or large tonsils, an operation should be done to take them out.
