About this book

Physiology and Hygiene for Secondary Schools is by Francis M. Walters, A.M. The preface says the aim in preparing this treatise on the human body has been, first, to set forth in a teachable manner the actual science of physiology, and second, to present the facts of hygiene largely as applied physiology. The preface says the view is held that right living consists in the harmonious adjustment of one's habits to the nature and plan of the body.

On the hygiene of the ear, the text says that removing ear wax with pointed instruments interferes with the natural method of discharge and irritates the membrane, and should never be practiced. On the detection of pitch, the text says the method of detecting tones of different pitch is not understood, and that several theories have been advanced, one of the most interesting being that proposed by Helmholtz, which is based on our knowledge of sympathetic vibrations. Experiment directions about carbon dioxide ask whether it possesses color and tell the reader to insert a burning splinter to see if it supports combustion.
