About this book
A True Hero, with the subtitle A Story of the Days of William Penn, is by William Henry Giles Kingston. Chapter One says the Protectorate had come to an end ten years before the period when the story commences. The opening describes Charles the Second, restored to the throne of England, as employed in outraging all the right feelings of the people over whom he was called to reign.
A character named Christison asks who the noble youth addressing the people is. Mead answers that the young man is William Penn, the son of the admiral who fought so well for the Commonwealth. A man who says “I am Wenlock Christison” also says “I come to prevent you from condemning the innocent.” A governor exclaims, “Carry them both off to prison. They will hang together well.”
