About this book
Cædwalla, with the subtitle Or, The Saxons in the Isle of Wight: A Tale, is a book by Frank Cowper. The preface says that in writing a story of the Isle of Wight in the seventh century, which shall at the same time be suitable for young people as well as historically truthful, there are many difficulties. The preface names Bede and the Saxon Chronicle as the authorities for this period.
In the story, a well-armed handsome stranger, taking a run and using his spear as a leaping pole, sprang lightly on board a boat without touching the water at all. The text says that Wulf the Atheling was very unlike his brother Cædwalla, having been spoilt as a child, and that the only quality the two had in common was great personal courage. A character named Arwald shouts, asking whether the dainty young chief of the robber-band is afraid to meet the axes of warriors.
