About this book

A quiet London room gives Elsie Kilner space to reckon with the family home she has lost. After her father's death leaves her brother in possession of the estate, she must build a life apart from the countryside she remembers. News of trouble in his household tests her ability to feel compassion for relatives who treated her badly. Then she discovers loose diary pages in a drawer, written in a hand remarkably like her own.

Sarah Doudney's 1896 novel connects this private struggle with Elsie's concern for a child named Jamie. Caring for him draws her out of herself, while renewed loneliness exposes feelings of jealousy toward the wealthy widow Mrs. Verdon. Domestic details, memories and inward arguments give the story its shape. Readers interested in Victorian fiction about belonging, resentment and the demands of kindness will find those concerns expressed through Elsie's changing responses to other people.
