About this book

An elderly narrator measures the changes in English life through memories of Lady Ludlow and her household. After her clergyman father's death, Margaret, about sixteen, accepts a distant relative's offer of a home among young gentlewomen at Hanbury Court. The invitation combines practical generosity with firm ideas about rank, dress, conduct and obedience. Even the family's treasured lace ruffles reveal how ancestry can become a source of pride amid financial hardship.

Published in 1858, Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell's novel gives social customs a personal voice through recollection, family conversation and carefully observed details. A Paris episode follows Clément as he seeks safety in disguise, with the old gardener Jacques acting as his ally and sharing his troubles after an arrest. Readers interested in nineteenth-century English society can find here a close look at the ways kindness, inherited status and dependence shape relationships.
