About this book
A Village of Vagabonds is by F. Berkeley Smith, and its contents list names chapters such as The House by the Marsh, Monsieur le Curé and The Bells of Pont du Sable. Other chapters are called The Exquisite Madame de Bréville, The Smugglers and The Horrors of War.
A narrator goes out on a bay to stalk the narrow, winding causeways that drain it, while a curlew calls cheerfully from the point of sand. Suzette sings all day on the days when the abandoned house is giving a dinner, because Suzette loves to cook. A room is described with a centre-table holding a small bottle of violet ink, a scratchy pen and an iron seal, and a faded photograph of a prize bull hangs above the fireplace, since Monsieur le Maire has been a dealer in Norman cattle. The text says that tomorrow begins the new year and every peasant girl's cheeks are scrubbed bright and her hair neatly dressed.
