About this book
The work Pride, One of the Seven Cardinal Sins, is illustrated with etchings by Adrian Marcel and comes in two volumes. The contents list gives chapter titles that include, among others, The Old Commander, The Brave Duke and The Dinner in the Arbour. A character named Olivier asks who an infallible man is, and Gerald replies that he is a hunchback no taller than that, indicating with his hand a height of about four and a half feet.
A character named Ernestine says to herself that people knew her name at the other entertainments and that it was only the heiress that they gazed at, and flattered, and besieged with attentions. Ernestine asks M. de Maillefort to forgive an extraordinary gaiety, saying that a strange thing has happened and that two men entered the house by a back stairway she had told him about.
