About this book

Arthur follows a narrator through a house where a gilded cage holding dead bengalis and love birds causes the visitor painful distress. The narrator longs to confide in a priest about the feelings prompted by the house, but the priest evades efforts to open the subject.

The narrator describes a circular hall furnished in a severe style, with valuable arms and four large family portraits. The description of a small parlour places a Saxony vase beside Hélène on a table covered with a cloth and says the vase had belonged to her mother. An apartment's ornaments include water-colours, sketches, plaster casts from antique models, and proofs of Rembrandt's etchings.

Eugène Sue

Eugene Sue (1804-1857) was a French novelist and former naval surgeon who became one of the first mass market serial writers with The Mysteries of Paris. His socialist sympathies won him a seat in the National Assembly and, after Louis Napoleon's coup, exile in Savoy, where he died.
