About this book

Poems pay the bills on the Moon, where officials assess each composition before it can circulate as money. This curious custom is one of the inventions encountered by the first-person traveller in Cyrano de Bergerac's comic fiction. His lunar travels become occasions to discuss language, government, natural philosophy and the assumptions people bring to unfamiliar societies.

The English text pairs imaginative adventure with extended conversation. In the sampled scene, the narrator asks how verse can purchase food and lodging, and his companion explains a system that rewards literary merit. Other chapter headings promise debates about atoms, the senses, books and the arrangement of lunar towns. The appeal lies in watching ordinary institutions take unexpected forms: an inn bill becomes a judgment on poetry, while distant inhabitants offer fresh grounds for examining life on Earth. Readers of speculative fiction can follow these playful thought experiments alongside the traveller's experiences.
