About this book

A Journal of a Visit of Three Days to Skibbereen, and Its Neighbourhood is by Elihu Burritt. The book carries an extract from the speech of Lord John Russell on the Irish Poor Relief Bill, March 12th, 1847. An appeal quoted in the text has Elihu Burritt saying he has come to an indescribable scene of destitution, desolation, and death.

The text says a single individual is reported to have given £1000 for Skibbereen. The journal describes a cabin where an old woman lay on a pallet of straw, and says that the sea-weed steaming in a small iron vessel was all the nourishment that the daughter could serve to her sick mother. The journal tells of a cabin where two little girls live alone with their dead mother, who had lain unburied seven days.
