About this book
A foggy road from London to Newbury leads William Cobbett from observations of weather to complaints about the state of farming. His dated journals follow routes through English villages, fields and estates, bringing together travel writing and arguments about public policy. Turnip crops, garden ornaments and the difficulties of selling farm stock all become occasions for judging how rural life is organised.
Published in 1830, the collection places landscape beside the hardships of working people. A labourer at Binley tells Cobbett that he has gone without meat since harvest, despite the sheep around him. Elsewhere, rain changes the planned route, and the account turns to a seasonal brook fed by the chalk hills. Readers interested in rural history can find details of watercourses and cultivation alongside an observer's forceful criticism of taxes, debt and the distribution of wealth.
