About this book
Travels in Central Asia recounts a journey made in 1863 from Teheran across the Turkoman desert on the eastern shore of the Caspian to Khiva, Bokhara and Samarcand. The narrator describes a long conversation with visitors about their companions, their selected route to Mecca and the route they intended to take after leaving Teheran. A Hadji from Chinese Tartary acts as the party’s spokesman for the most part and is described as wearing a new green over-dress over ragged clothing and a colossal white turban.
The narrator describes hospitality as the only quality the Turkomans have retained uncorrupted, displayed to all strangers whether they stay a day or a year. The account identifies Mezari Sherif as an important pilgrimage destination because the site is said to contain the tomb of Ali.
