About this book

Love and Liberty presents itself as a narrative of the French Revolution of 1792. A man riding from Clermont to St. Menehould cries that brigands are marching on Varennes, and fifty men set out under Bertrand without asking the enemy's number. The narrator expects to find Varennes in flames but reports a quiet town, where the men from Clermont have been mistaken for the expected brigands.

The Assembly learns of a decision by the Cordeliers and the Jacobins and appeals to Bailly and the municipal council over the people's assertion of supremacy. Bailly and his council decide that a decree continuing the suppression of executive power until the Constitutional Act has been presented to and accepted by the King should be posted.
