About this book
Admiral Peters by W. W. Jacobs opens with Mr. George Burton, naval pensioner, sitting at the door of his lodgings gazing in placid content at the sea. Mr. Burton recognises Joe Stiles and tells him he did not know him without his beard. Mr. Stiles asks, "What about that drink you were speaking of, George?"
The hero says the hottest time he had, he thinks, was at the bombardment of Alexandria, and that he stood alone. Mr. Burton says he was just behind Mr. Stiles, and Mr. Stiles answers that so far as his memory goes he was the only man there. At a booking-office, Mr. Stiles insists firmly upon a first-class ticket and demands, "Who ever heard of an admiral riding third?"
