About this book

Bob's Redemption appears under the heading Captains All, Book 5, with the name W.W. Jacobs. A night-watchman says with a hard laugh that people should not talk to him about gratitude, as he has seen too much of it. The night-watchman says that for over six months he wrote all 'Arry Thomson's love-letters.

A young chap named Bob Evans falls overboard on the way home from Auckland in a barque called the Dragon Fly, and George Crofts goes overboard after him and saves his life. A man tells George it is twelve shillings for three upper circles, and George is beginning to stammer. George Crofts says he had fourteen pounds when he was paid off, and that it is melting like butter.

W. W. Jacobs (William Wymark Jacobs, 1863 to 1943) was an English writer born in London, the son of a wharf manager. He drew on that dockside world for comic stories of sailors and night watchmen, though he is best remembered for the chilling tale "The Monkey's Paw."
