About this book
Adrien Leroy is credited to Charles Garvice. Chapter I begins on a cold night in early spring with the West End streets nearly deserted, and at the entrance of one of the most luxurious clubs in Pall Mall two men in immaculate evening dress stand surveying the crowds. Julia Lester is far from old on closer inspection, and her sister, only about ten years younger, would easily have passed as twenty-five, especially behind the footlights.
The text says Jasper Vermont, as a young man and during a quarrel with his father, lodged in the same house with the handsome sisters Julia and Ada Lester. Jessica stands watching listlessly near Charing Cross as a handsome motor rolls up before a theatre with the name "The Casket" in coloured lights. A speaker tells Mr. Vermont, "We have every reason to believe that you have had some connection with this affair of Harker's notwithstanding your profession of friendship for Adrien."
