About this book
The Dark Flower is a book by John Galsworthy. A youth walks along Holywell on an afternoon of early June with his short gown drooping down his arms, and no cap on his thick dark hair. A quoted epigraph says to take the flower from my breast, I pray thee, and then go hence, for see, the night is fair.
Peasant girls in their blue linen skirts are shown already gathering into bundles what the men had scythed. A boy who had never been out of England before finds everything strange and glamorous. A figure walks quickly down a street close to the houses on the further side, sees that the windows of her house were lighted, and wonders whether there is no way to bring her to the window.
